Ongoing Jat protests reach Delhi

The ongoing agitation in Haryana has now sparked protests in North-west Delhi. The protesters are seeking reservation in education and government jobs under the banner of Akhil Bharatiya Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti (ABJASS). They have also demanded that the Haryana government releases the Jat youths jailed for the violent agitation in Haryana in February 2016 and compensation and jobs to families that lost their members in the agitation. Whilst the protests have to far remained peaceful, last year similar demonstrations resulted in violence. There are plans for a further protest to be held on 12 February at the Loni border and on 14 February in Bawana.

Those who plan to travel to or within India are advised to be aware of nationwide current and upcoming Jat protests. Whilst the protests are expected to remain relatively peaceful and to pass without incident, due to the volume of those expected to attend it is advisable to avoid overly large crowds during this time. Protests by the same community turned violent last year. Re-route all travel to avoid protest locations.
