Tens of thousands expected to attend Islamist rally in Jakarta

Upwards of 10,000 police and security officials will be deployed for a planned rally by Islamist organisations outside the House of Representatives building, located on Jalan Jenderal Gatot Subroto on 21 February. The protest is taking place to demand the imprisonment of the Jakarta governor Basuki ‘Ahok’ Tjahaja Purnama, over alleged anti-Islamic comments. With several mass rallies against Ahok since October, the case has drawn concerns over ‘mob justice’ and the ability of the masses to pressure the government and influence judicial outcomes. The Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), who are known for violent protesting and attacks against minorities, are expected to attend the protest.

Those residing or operating in Jakarta are advised to be aware of the planned mass rally on 21 February. Tens of thousands are expected to attend. Avoid all large gatherings of people, due to the credible risk of protest related violence breaking out. Leave the vicinity if tensions begin to escalate. Road closures are likely to be implemented with little to no warning. Monitor local media for more advice concerning the progression of the trial and follow all directives issued by local authorities.
