The Jakarta Police have warned the public to be wary of large protests planned for 11, 12 and 15 February, the final date being that of the Jakarta gubernatorial election. On 11 February, protesters from various conservative Muslim groups will gather at the Istiqlal Mosque to perform morning prayers. After that, they will walk to Monas (the National Monument) via Jl. MH. Thamrin, where they will disperse. Groups attending include the National Movement to Safeguard the Indonesian Ulema Council’s Fatwa (GNPF-MUI), the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) and the Muslim People’s Forum (FUI). Similar protests by these groups have been well attended and led to violent clashes with the police. On 12 February, a day after the campaign period ends, a large Quran recital will be held at Istiqlal Mosque. On 15 February, polling day, some of the same groups plan to perform morning prayers at Istiqlal Mosque and several musholas (small mosques) before ‘monitoring’ voting at polling stations. The Jakarta chief of police has warned that all political rallies that occur after 12 February will be dispersed.
Travellers are advised to expect short-notice travel disruptions in Jakarta in the run up to the 15 February elections. Those operating in the city are advised to avoid polling stations and any rallies due to the heightened risk of violent unrest. Monitor local media for up to date information about any associated disruptions to travel and follow the advice of local authorities.
