Protests in Kyrgyzstan have continued near the State Committee for National Security (GKNB) offices in Ala-Too Square in Bishkek. The protests have gathered several hundreds of people, who are demanding the release of opposition Ata-Meken (Fatherland) party leader Omurbek Tekebaev. Tekebaev, a former ally who is now a vocal critic of President Almazbek Atambaev, was detained at Bishkek airport early on 26 February, upon arrival from Turkey. More than 1,000 supporters protested outside the headquarters of the State Committee for National Security (GKNB) on 26 February, demanding his release. Further demonstrations should be anticipated over the next few days.
Those operating or residing in Kyrgyzstan are advised to be aware of a second day of protests to demand the release of the oppositional party leader. Avoid all large gathering of people and plan your travel accordingly to bypass any subsequent road blockades.
