At least 8 Malian soldiers have been killed in an ambush on a military convoy near the town of Nampala in the west-central region. Although there has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, rebel groups - some with links to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) - have recently stepped up their campaign against the Malian government and its international allies, carrying out a series of attacks on security forces. Mali security forces are struggling to keep control of the security environment, despite the presence of French and United Nations troops, with the government recently extending the national state of emergency for another six months.
It is advisable to defer all non-essential travel to northern and central Mali and Nampala until further notice. Register with consular authorities and travel in convoy with personal armed security escorts at all times.
