The Governor of Veracruz has announced that an undisclosed number of National Gendarmerie officers are set to be deployed to the municipalities of Xalapa and Córdoba, to combat an increase in criminal activity. US officials have previously warned of the dangers involved with travelling in Mexico. In December 2016 the US State Department issued an alert to remind of the risks involved with travelling in Mexico in light of continued organised criminal activity in certain parts of the country, citing homicides, kidnappings, carjacking’s and robberies in several Mexican states.
Those planning to travel to or within Mexico are reminded to exercise caution due to the high risk of homicides, kidnappings, carjacking’s, robberies and drug related violence. Maintain a heightened sense of vigilance and awareness of your surroundings. Limit travel to areas frequented by tourists and avoid all situations in which you may become isolated.
