Mexico: US Department of State Issues Warning Over Spring Break

US Department of State Issues Warning Over Spring Break

As thousands prepare to travel to Mexico for Spring Break, the US State Department continues to caution against travelling to certain areas of the country, due to the threat of violent crime, including homicide, kidnappings, carjacking’s and robberies. They stated that “Gun battles between rival criminal organizations or with Mexican authorities have taken place on streets and in public places during broad daylight.” The warning includes travel to tourism hotspots such as Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara and Mexico City. The tourist areas of Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya and Tulum are not included under the warning, but those who are travelling to such areas are nonetheless advised to be aware of the general threat of drug related violence in Mexico.

Those planning to travel to or within Mexico are reminded to exercise caution due to the high risk of homicides, kidnappings, carjacking’s, robberies and drug related violence. Maintain a heightened sense of vigilance and awareness of your surroundings. Refrain from travelling to secluded areas and avoid all situations in which you may become isolated.
