On 11 May, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) issued updated travel advice to warn that the government of Nepal has scheduled local level elections to take place on 14 May and 14 June. The security situation in the lead up to and soon after the elections may be unpredictable and violent clashes should not be ruled out. There is the potential for strikes, protests border closures and restrictions to public transport to take place relating to the elections.
Those operating or residing in Nepal are advised to be aware of upcoming local elections on 14 May. Avoid any election related protests and demonstrations as even those expected to remain peaceful can see tensions escalate with little to no warning. Plan your travel accordingly during this period in order to avoid delays to your journey.
