US Embassy Warns of Teachers Strike Between 13-17 March
The US Embassy in Niamey has issued a security message to advise of a planned teacher’s strike that will continue from 13-17 March if a resolution is not reached over the weekend. Student unrest and spontaneous demonstrations, which have included burning tyres and rocks being thrown, have been associated with such strikes. Travel routes have been affected on Tillabery Road, Boulevard Mali Bero and the Kennedy Bridge.
Those operating or residing in Niger are advised to be aware of a possible continuation of a teacher strike. Even demonstrations which are intended to be peaceful can quickly deteriorate and descend into violence. Avoid all large crowds and protests and seek shelter if tensions escalate. Plan your travel accordingly in order to avoid delays to your journey.
