At least 66 people have been confirmed dead from a severe outbreak of Lassa fever in Nigeria, a country which already battling a meningitis crisis which has killed over 800 people this year alongside 8057 suspected cases reported. The government has commented that 16 of Nigeria’s 36 states have been affected by the latest Lassa fever outbreak since the beginning of 2017. Lassa fever is an acute viral disease, usually transmitted by infected rats. There is no known vaccine and prevention consists largely of isolating oneself from infected persons and rats.
The latest outbreak of meningitis is of a strain resistant to the standard vaccine. Consult your doctor prior to travelling to discuss appropriate vaccination cover. Avoid contact with those who are infected with Lassa fever and take the necessary precautions to avoid coming into contact with rats.
