Pakistan: Security Stepped up in Red Zone Ahead of Court Verdict
1,500 security personnel deployed in the Red Zone ahead of Supreme Court verdict
Upwards of 1500 security personnel have been deployed across Islamabad’s Red Zone area, which includes the Parliament House, Supreme Court (SC) and other key government buildings, such as embassies and diplomatic representations, ahead of the SC verdict on the alleged involvement of the Prime Minister and his family in the Panama Papers corruption scandal. Security was increased after the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party announced their plans to rally at the Shakarparian Parade Ground in Islamabad throughout the 20 April, in conjunction with the SC verdict.
Those operating or residing in Islamabad are advised to exercise heightened vigilance and expect robust security measures associated with overland travel disruptions in the Red Zone for the next 24 hours. Avoid all protests and report any suspicious packages, behaviour or activity to the authorities.
