Pakistan: US Embassy Issues Security Alert for Islamabad

Demonstrations taking place in Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and other cities

On 30 August, the US Embassy in Islamabad issued a security message. “…both announced and unannounced anti-American demonstrations have occurred in large metropolitan areas throughout Pakistan in response to the United States’ recently announced new South Asia policy. Demonstrations have taken place in Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, and other cities. These events have prompted additional limitations on the movements of U.S. government personnel in Pakistan. The U.S. Mission in Pakistan recommends that U.S. citizens in Pakistan avoid demonstrations and other large crowds and remain vigilant about their surroundings at all times. Even gatherings intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. U.S. citizens should carry appropriate identity documents when in Pakistan and should cooperate with police and security forces in any encounter. Cellphone connections may be disrupted during periods of unrest."

Those operating or residing in Pakistan are advised to maintain a heightened sense of security and to take the appropriate measures to enhance their personal security at all times, due to the serious threat of civil unrest, kidnapping and terrorist violence in the country. Be aware of the potential for both indiscriminate and planned coordinated terror attacks to take place. Take particular care when in proximity to areas populated with westerners.
