Philippines: ASG Claim to Have Executed Kidnapped German National

ASG execute German kidnap victim

Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) militants have claimed to have executed their 72-year-old German kidnap victim, who was abducted from his yacht off the coast of Tawi-Tawi on 6 November 2016, after the deadline passed to pay a multi-million-dollar ransom for his release. The group released a video of Jurgen Kantner, with his hands tied behind his back, being beheaded in a jungle clearing. He could be heard on video saying "Now he'll kill me", before a man began cutting his head off with a large knife. Officials have yet to officially confirm that Mr Kantner has been beheaded. A police report released on Sunday 26 February said Mr Kantner was executed at around 3.30pm in Buanza district, Indanan town, Sulu province, 1,500km south of the capital Manila.

Those operating or residing in the Philippines are advised to defer all non-essential travel to the Sulu archipelago, including to the major islands of Basilan and Jolo, due to the threat of kidnapping and extreme violence. Contract a reliable local security escort for purposes of business and critical travel.
