All flights to Mogadishu Aden Addle International airport (MGQ) will be suspended on Wednesday 8 February due to Somalia’s presidential election. Roads in Mogadishu have been closed, businesses asked to shut and schools and universities have given students a two-day break. The closures and suspensions are part of the Somali government’s measures to ensure security during the election. In the run-up to the election, Al Shabaab militants have stepped up their attacks against government installations and hotels in the capital. The Al Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group may seek to directly disrupt the elections and many governments have issued terrorism warnings as a result. Travellers are advised to avoid all unnecessary travel outside of compounds within Mogadishu until the election has passed peacefully.
