Somalia’s Public Works Minister has been killed after being shot near the presidential palace, when his convoy was attacked in Mogadishu. It was not immediately clear who was responsible for his death or what prompted the deadly gunfire, although some unconfirmed reports have suggested it was possibly accidental. Al-Qaeda affiliated al-Shabaab operate in Mogadishu and frequently carry out attacks on security and government forces and installations.
For any business-critical travel in Somalia, travellers are advised to vary their routines regularly and avoid all travel after dark. Al-Shabaab and other Islamic extremists frequently carry out attacks and kidnap travellers. Attacks are generally directed at security force checkpoints, government buildings, police stations and hotels. Exercise particular caution in and around these areas and report any suspicious packages, behaviour or activity to the authorities.
