Shops looted and vehicles and buildings set ablaze
A number of shops have been looted, with vehicles and buildings set ablaze after service delivery protests escalated into violence in Lichtenburg and neighbouring Coligny in the North West province. A heightened security presence has been reported in the area in the wake of the unrest. It has been reported that tensions remain high.
Those operating in Lichtenburg and the surrounding areas are advised to be aware of heightened tensions and an increased security presence. Avoid travelling to townships without an experienced guide. Avoid all large gatherings of people and leave the vicinity if tensions further escalate into violence.
