Thousand rally in support of the former head of Catalonia

Tens of thousands of protesters have gathered the main Barcelona court in support of the former head of the eastern Spanish region of Catalonia, as he goes on trial for staging a 2014 informal referendum on independence. Catalonia, which is a region with its own language and culture, is home to a strong separatist movement and many pro-independence campaigners. Two years ago, they organised a vote on whether to break away from Spain. However, the poll was carried out without legal backing as the central government in Spain blocked it, stating it was against the constitution. The former head of Catalonia, Artur Mas, is standing accused of disobedience against the state of Spain. If found guilty, he could face up to ten years in prison. Supporters of independence have gathered outside of the court with regional flags.

Those operating or residing in Spain are advised to be aware of a mass protest outside the main court in Barcelona. Whilst the demonstration is expected to remain peaceful and to pass without incident, due to the volume of those expected to attend it is advisable to avoid overly large crowds during this time. Re-route all travel to avoid the demonstration location and plan your travel accordingly.
