Sweden: Rioting Reported in Stockholm Suburb

Violent clashes result in injuries and more arson attacks

Several people have been injured, at least seven cars set on fire and a number of shops looted, after local youths began rioting following the arrest of a resident by police near the main train station in Rinkeby, Stockholm. Police reportedly fired warning shots into the air and one officer has been injured so far. Since 2015, Sweden has been plagued by an epidemic of crime and arson attacks. In 2016 alone, more than 70 cars were burned, indicative of increasing violence and criminal activity in the country. The surge in crime coincides with the migrant crises unfolding across the world, with a rise in sexual assault, drug crime and children involved in carrying weapons. At current, 55 areas within Sweden are on a “black-list” which has been further divided into three categories, from “risk areas” to “seriously vulnerable.” Stockholm has 20 no-go areas where over 75,000 people live.

Those operating or residing in Sweden are advised to be aware of rioting and arson attacks in Stockholm. Expect heightened security in the city and avoid “no-go” or “black-listed” areas due the credible risk of violence and arson attacks on vehicles. Monitor local media for more information concerning the violence and follow all directives issued by local authorities. Report any suspicious activity to the authorities and remain vigilant.
