Venezuela: US Embassy in Caracas Issues Security Message

Expect heightened security and disruptions to travel

On 17 April, the US Embassy in Caracas issued a security message to advise that La Mesa de la Unidad (MUD), Venezuela’s main opposition party, has called for a citywide march to the Office of the Ombudsman in Caracas on 19 April at 10:00 local time. Those participating in the march are expected to pass throughout many areas in the city, including Santa Mónica, 23 de Enero, Caricuao, La Vega, Montalbán, Paraíso, Antímano, Junquito, Vista Alegre, San Juan, La Pastora, La Candelaria, San Agustín, Santa Teresa, Coche, El Valle, San Pedro, La Victoria, El Recreo, Plaza Las Américas, Calle Élice de Chacao, El Marqués, Santa Fe, La Trinidad, Plaza Altamira y Los Dos Caminos. MUD have also announced that similar demonstrations may take place in other parts of Venezuela. It is likely that there will be severe disruptions to travel during this time and a heavy military presence throughout the city. Recent protests have seen the use of tear gas, rubber bullets and violent clashes.

Those operating or residing in Venezuela are advised to operate with a heightened level of vigilance and to take the appropriate steps to enhance their security. Avoid all large crowds due to the credible threat of protest related violence. Leave the vicinity at the first signs of escalating tensions. Reroute all travel to avoid the city during this time.
